A castle no more

Castrum ad divisas…

Devizes Castle

The original Devizes Castle is said to have been built at the meeting point of Bishop Cannings, Rowde and Potterne villages – the name ‘Devizes’ is derived from the Latin ‘ad devisas’ meaning ‘at the boundaries’.

The building was destroyed, plundered and rebuilt and is now a private residence, but you can catch a glimpse of it off St. John’s Street. In the past there have been carnival events and fayres in the moat that surrounds this impressive building.

Visit the Trust for Devizes website to read about bloody battles, dissenting voices and our historic market place.
